Outreach and Support Services to the Homeless
LARS provides Outreach and Support Services to homeless individuals and families under a grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Some of the support services provided include case management, referrals for substance abuse treatment or halfway houses, health care services such as prescription payments, employment assistance, first month’s rent assistance, transportation, and birth certificate fees. In 2002, under the HUD Homeless Grant, LARS served 125 individuals and 21 families with 35 children Additionally, LARS provided 4,329 emergency bed-nights for homeless individuals and families. Below are some 2002 highlights regarding these families and individuals.
50 clients moved into rental homes or apartment, in with family or friends, or into transitional housing within six months. 12 clients moved into a boarding house, 19 moved into a halfway house to continue their recovery process and 10 clients moved into an inpatient substance abuse treatment program.
74 of the clients obtained steady employment income (compared to day labor) within six months of receiving LARS services.
72 clients received case management services and were assisted in obtaining identification and in applying for mainstream social services. 52 clients were referred to substance abuse programs or services, 14 were referred for mental health services and 23 clients received assistance with prescription payments or other medically necessary treatment
